Very Teri – How Do You…Say No

How do you say no?  I’ll be honest here and say I don’t do this very well. Over the years I have learned to say “NO”, to well. It’s usually the first thing that comes out of my mouth. I think this comes from saying yes to many times and then realizing I had to much to do.

It’s not that I want to say no, I just need time to think and process the request before I decide. I’m actually reading a book by Julie Morgenstern called Time Management from the Inside Out. In her book she has a section on, The Art of Saying No and even gives ways too, Practice Saying No. I plan on studying this section for awhile. To many times my “NO” comes across as, I just don’t want to do anything with you. Ugh…

Rethinking how I say “NO”…

HaH! indeed, saying no can be difficult, but not impossible. It is a learned skill, how to say no effectively and without being insensative. Here is what I’ve learned: “let me check my schedule and I’ll get back to you.” That buys you some time to decide if you really want to say yes, or no. It gives you some time to prepare how to say no graciously too. “It’s really not going to work out for me to help you do….., but here’s what I can do.” If anything, that is.

I’m interested in what the book says.
