Mother Of The Bride ~ Sewing Machine Search
If you are a DIY (do-it yourself) type person, you probably have a sewing machine in the house. I have an old 830 Bernina that was handed down to me from my mother. It was used when she purchased it for herself. I love this machine. The bobbin thread never (ok, I can’t remember the last time) runs out until I’m at the end of my seam, nice!
The last time I had it serviced they said I’d probably need a new one soon. They have to find parts from other machines to keep mine together. It fell on the floor once and the thread holder broke off. They replaced it with one that is barely tall enough to hold the thread. Why did it fall on the floor? I have children…enough said?!
When my daughters were little I sewed dresses for them, doll clothes, blankets and other crafty things for around the house. As my daughters got older they began to use my machine and sew also. They did projects in 4-H and even entered them in our local fair.
I want my daughters to have their own sewing machine by the time they get married or leave our home. I have used mine so much from the beginning of my married life I’m sure it would be a very used and helpful tool.
My married daughter left with a nice machine we purchased used from a quilting shop. It’s a Huskavarna Viking – The Lily 545. She is now using it to sew baby blankets, spit rags and changing table pads for her baby boy due this June.
My next daughter will leave the end of July. I am on a quest to find her the perfect sewing machine before she leaves. This so far has not been an easy task. If you ask people what they have and what they like no one brand stands out! And some brands have been good but there is a lemon thrown in here and there. Ugh!
My plan is to hit the sewing machine stores in town as well as the quilting and fabric stores. I’ll ask lots of questions and then try and make a good choice. It doesn’t have to be a new one I guess. Just a nice one that will last her for a long time. She is a beginner and will be sewing fun and easy things, probably goodies for the house they are hoping to purchase.
Have any of you bought a new machine in the $400.00 price range that you just love?
